'Hey, what are we?': Benny Blanco says Selena Gomez woke him at 3:30 a.m. to make their relationship official

Benny Blanco finally explained how he became Selena Gomez's boyfriend. On Tuesday's (6) episode of the 'Friends Keep Secrets' podcast, which he co-hosts with Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco, the producer answered a caller who, five years into a relationship, wanted to know how to tell if it was heading toward something lasting like his. The answer came as a story: shortly after they started dating in early 2023, Selena woke him around 3:30 a.m.

'She said, "Hey, what are we?"' Benny recalled. The singer was leaving for New York and wanted to know what to say if anyone asked about them. He turned the question back and said he didn't know, until he heard: 'Well, I'm asking you.' That, he said, is when it clicked that she was his girlfriend: 'I didn't really have an option, and I wanted it.' Selena went public with the romance in December 2023; the engagement came a year later and the wedding in September 2025.

In the same conversation, Benny said he tells Selena every day that she is beautiful and described her melasma as a spot where 'God kissed her', calling it 'one of my favorite parts about her'. Selena herself was quietly listening to the recording and, near the end, confirmed she had been helping her husband answer the caller. The story spread on social media, where some people found it cringeworthy.
