Saturday's update confirmed what Friday hinted at: 'Verity', the Colleen Hoover adaptation starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, is set to open to about $33 million in the U.S., according to estimates reported by TheWrap. The Amazon MGM release made $15 million on Friday alone from 3,510 locations and cost around $40 million. The reception is lukewarm, though: a C+ CinemaScore and a 34% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, against 70% from audiences.

At the other end, 'Digger', Alejandro G. Iñárritu's satire starring Tom Cruise, is headed for fifth place with about $7.5 million from 3,321 theaters, behind 'Resident Evil' ($12.5 million), 'Heart of the Beast' ($11 million) and 'Primetime' ($8 million). With a budget estimated between $125 million and $160 million, it is Cruise's weakest opening since 'Lions for Lambs', which debuted to $6.7 million in 2007.

Cruise did not hide. On Saturday he posted behind-the-scenes photos, saying he was 'so honored' to have made the film and 'so proud of what we created', and thanked the cast and crew. Guillermo del Toro also stood up for his fellow Mexican filmmaker, calling 'Digger' 'daring, bold and cinematically complex', praising its 'scale, ambition and reach' and dismissing the criticism as 'entirely petty'.
