Jon Watts, who directed Tom Holland's Spider-Man trilogy, has been picked to direct the first film in a new 'Star Wars' trilogy, according to reports published over the weekend by US trade outlets. Simon Kinberg, who has been developing the project since late 2024, is writing and producing.

Lucasfilm has made no official announcement, and it is unclear whether the story directly continues the saga's latest trilogy. There is speculation about Daisy Ridley returning as Rey, but that is unconfirmed too. Shooting could begin in 2027.

Watts already knows the galaxy: he co-created the series 'Skeleton Crew', released on Disney+ in 2024. The franchise's next theatrical release is Shawn Levy's 'Starfighter', starring Ryan Gosling, due in 2027.
