'You threw water at me once, twice, three times': Gusttavo Lima ordered to compensate woman he had removed from New Year's show
She asked for R$500,000 and was awarded R$5,000 in moral damages; her lawyers will appeal for more.
Foto: O Tempo/ReproduçãoBrazilian sertanejo star Gusttavo Lima has been ordered to pay R$5,000 (about US$900) in moral damages to Virginia Nogueira, the woman he had removed from a New Year's Eve show at the turn of 2022 to 2023 at the Marina Park Hotel in Fortaleza. The ruling, signed by Judge Carlos Marcello Sales Campos, also holds the hotel's operator, Marina de Iracema Park S.A., jointly liable. The decision came to light this week.
The incident went viral at the time: from the stage, the singer pointed at the fan and said 'You can take her out of the event. You threw water at me once, twice, three times', also offering to refund her ticket. In court, Lima's defense argued the removal was necessary because of alleged bottle throwing and blamed the fan alone. The judge found that organizers could take security measures, but that singling her out and exposing her publicly went too far, noting that the artist's fame amplified the fallout.
Nogueira had asked for R$500,000 plus reimbursement for her ticket, lodging, travel and food, and R$50,000 for professional losses, claims rejected for lack of evidence. Her lawyer, Decio Mota, says the amount is too low given the exposure and the online and local harassment she suffered, and that they will appeal. The hotel argued it only provided the venue for the event.
