Luciano Miranda, known as Babu, the voice behind Salvador Carnival hits with Pagodart in the 2000s, is close to fulfilling a long-held dream: singing again. Off stages and Carnival trucks for six years because of morbid obesity, the Bahian singer, who once weighed more than 300 kg, has lost more than 108 kg over the past three years, according to Metrópoles.

The decisive step came on Aug. 28, when he underwent successful bariatric surgery at the Hospital da Obesidade in Salvador. His treatment began about a decade ago. 'When I decided to have surgery, it took more than 10 years,' he said. 'I couldn't take it anymore. I was lying to myself.'

Besides Pagodart, Babu has also performed with bands such as Psirico and Gente da Gente. Now he says he wants a better quality of life 'to enjoy my grandchildren' — and makes no secret of his plan to reunite with fans. After the operation, he posted a message: 'Wait for me, my Bahia!'
