Puppets, claymation and GWAR in 'V/H/S/Mixtape', Chastain in 3,200 theaters and bingeable Stephen King: the weekend horror took over every screen
With 'Other Mommy' in theaters, the new 'V/H/S' on Shudder and the freshly released series 'Carrie' and 'Below', October's first big week belongs almost entirely to horror.

1) 'Other Mommy' (theaters, from Friday, Oct. 9): directed by Rob Savage ('The Boogeyman') and starring Jessica Chastain, it adapts 'Incidents Around the House' by 'Bird Box' author Josh Malerman and is rated R for 'bloody violence and language'. Universal is opening it in about 3,200 North American theaters, with projections ranging from '$20 million or more' (Variety) to $28.5–35 million (Box Office Theory), well above the $7–8 million Sony is aiming for with Aaron Sorkin's 'The Social Reckoning'. 2) 'V/H/S/Mixtape' (Shudder, from Friday, Oct. 9): the latest chapter of the found-footage anthology bets on music-driven segments featuring puppets, claymation and metal band GWAR.
3) 'Carrie' (Prime Video, from Wednesday, Oct. 7): Mike Flanagan's take on Stephen King's first novel dropped all eight episodes at once, with Summer H. Howell in the title role and Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White. 4) 'Below' (Netflix, from Thursday, Oct. 8): six episodes in which Josh Hartnett plays a Newfoundland fisherman face to face with a sea creature.
And the package doesn't stop there: 5) 'Crystal Lake', the 'Friday the 13th' spinoff series, premieres on Peacock on Oct. 15 with all eight episodes at once. Meanwhile, the weekend box office fight also includes 'Verity', with Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, which Variety expects to earn $13 million to $16 million in its second weekend.
