8 years later, the sequel is happening — as a series: HBO orders 'Crazy Rich Asians' with Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh returning
The 2018 film's co-writer, who turned down a sequel after a pay dispute, is running the eight-episode series based on Kevin Kwan's books.

Television ordered an eight-episode, hour-long drama series based on Kevin Kwan's trilogy ('Crazy Rich Asians', 'China Rich Girlfriend' and 'Rich People Problems'). Constance Wu and Henry Golding return as Rachel Chu and Nick Young, Ronny Chieng comes back as Eddie Cheng and Michelle Yeoh reprises the formidable Eleanor Young in a recurring role.
The showrunner is Adele Lim, co-writer of the 2018 film. She had declined to work on a big-screen sequel after reportedly being offered about an eighth of her co-writer's salary — and the second film never materialized. "It's a 'Crazy Rich' family reunion," Lim said in a statement. "This series is the sequel we've been waiting for." Jon M. Chu, who directed the film, Kevin Kwan and Color Force's Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are executive producers.
Not everyone was confirmed: Gemma Chan (Astrid) and Harry Shum Jr. (Charlie) were left off the announced cast, and Consequence notes their deals could still be in the works or the roles could be recast. The writers' room is already in place and production is expected in 2027, with no premiere date yet.
