12 of 15 reviews rotten and still up to $30 million: Jessica Chastain horror 'Other Mommy' is set to steamroll 'The Social Reckoning' at the box office

Not screened for critics, Rob Savage's film was slammed on opening night but is still expected to top the U.S. weekend.

'Other Mommy', Universal's new horror film starring Jessica Chastain, opened in U.S. theaters on Friday (Oct. 9) to a reception that was hardly scary — for the studio, at least. Because the film was not screened for critics in advance, reviews only appeared after Thursday preview showings, and of the first 15 logged on Rotten Tomatoes, 12 were rotten, according to Forbes. That is quite a contrast for Chastain, whose previous horror films were all 'fresh' on the site.

Directed by Rob Savage ('The Boogeyman'), the film casts Chastain as Ursula, a woman whose marriage to Jay Duplass's character is falling apart while a demonic entity — which takes many forms, including her own doppelganger, the 'Other Mommy' — tries to take over the couple's 8-year-old daughter, Bela. The Hollywood Reporter's Richard Lawson called it 'an attractive but mostly vacuous collection of jumpy bits and half-baked mythology'; Culture Mix's Carla Hay went further: 'an incoherent embarrassment to everyone involved'.

None of that seems to threaten the top spot. Boxoffice Pro projects $17 million to $22 million for the weekend, and TheWrap points to around $24 million, possibly closer to $30 million. Aaron Sorkin's 'The Social Reckoning', which cost about $30 million net, is expected to open between $6 million and $10 million from about 2,500 locations — well below the $22.4 million 'The Social Network' made in 2010. Last week's leader, 'Verity', is expected to land between the two.
