Twin sisters, a shattered world and an Avatar branded a destroyer: the story of 'Avatar: Seven Havens', which premiered Friday and has already secured two more seasons — plus a sibling series, 'Kuruk'

Twenty-one years after 'The Last Airbender', the creators who walked away from Netflix's live-action version returned to 2D animation — and the comeback was rewarded on premiere day.

The road to 'Avatar: Seven Havens' starts with a break-up. Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, creators of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' (which premiered on Feb. 21, 2005) and 'The Legend of Korra', left Netflix's live-action adaptation in 2020 over creative differences. In 2021 they returned to Nickelodeon to lead the newly formed Avatar Studios, and in February 2025 the announcement came: a new 2D animated series, the third in the universe, with 26 episodes split into two 'Books'.

The premise flips what fans knew upside down. The story is set after Korra, in a world devastated by a cataclysm, where being the Avatar is no longer a sign of salvation: a young Earthbender, Pavi, discovers she is the spirit's new incarnation — and is therefore seen as humanity's destroyer. Hunted by human and spirit enemies, she teams up with her long-lost twin sister, Nisha, to uncover their origins and save the Seven Havens of the title. Saheli Khan voices Pavi, Aishu Devan plays Nisha, and the voice cast also includes Major Curda, Darren Barnet, Dianne Doan and veteran Dee Bradley Baker.

The first three episodes of Book 1 arrived on Paramount+ worldwide on Friday (Oct. 9); the rest roll out in weekly batches on Oct. 16, 23 and 30, when the final four debut. That same day, on New York Comic Con's Main Stage, in a panel moderated by Janet Varney — the original voice of Korra — the duo showed a 'script-to-screen' behind-the-scenes clip and announced the series has been renewed for Books 3 and 4, which will continue the twins' saga.

And the franchise doesn't stop there: they also announced 'Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos', a new Paramount+ original animated series with Konietzko as showrunner. It follows a rebellious teenage Avatar who throws out thousands of years of tradition and learns the four elements on globetrotting adventures, while dodging an angry teacher, pirates and chaotic spirits. No premiere date has been set.
