A D+ from audiences, but $12.3 million on Friday: Jessica Chastain's 'Other Mommy' eyes a $27.5 million opening and leaves Sorkin's 'The Social Reckoning' in 5th place
The $19 million Blumhouse horror film is set to beat the studio's own projection despite the worst CinemaScore since 'Megalopolis'.
Foto: Universal Pictures/Blumhouse/DivulgaçãoCritics didn't like it and neither did opening-night audiences, but the box office ignored both. 'Other Mommy', the Universal and Blumhouse horror film starring Jessica Chastain, earned $12.3 million on Friday (Oct. 9) in the U.S., according to Deadline's numbers, including $3.6 million from Thursday previews. It is now projected to take $27.5 million over the weekend from 3,365 screens, well above the $20 million Universal itself had forecast.
The result is even more striking given the reviews: the film, directed by Rob Savage and produced by James Wan, holds an 18% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and received a D+ CinemaScore, the lowest for any release since 'Megalopolis' in September 2024. On a $19 million budget, the opening should land in line with 'The Black Phone 2' ($27.3 million) and above 'The Exorcist: Believer' ($26.5 million).
The disappointment is 'The Social Reckoning', Aaron Sorkin's return to the world of Facebook: the drama is tracking below estimates and should open to around $6 million in fifth place. Between the leader and Sorkin are three holdovers: 'Verity' ($13.3 million), 'Resident Evil' ($7 million) and 'Heart of the Beast' ($6.2 million). Final numbers arrive on Sunday.
