Checked suit, blond bangs, 35.9 million views and a crypto token in the bio: who is Jean Phil, the Paris 'shadowboxer' who may not even exist?

The character throwing punches at the air around Paris has taken over Instagram, TikTok and X — and the internet suspects he is AI-made and a showcase for a token.

Jean Phil, or Jean Philanthrope, first appeared on Instagram on September 17, 2026: a silent man in a brown checked suit, striped tie, blond bangs and a twirled mustache, shadowboxing in cafés, streets and landmarks around Paris. Within days he spread to TikTok and X; a clip set to Nelly's 'Dilemma' hit 5.6 million views in three days, and the official site says his most-watched video has passed 35.9 million. Fans compare him to Lord Farquaad from 'Shrek' and to a poodle.

The question driving the meme is whether he is real. The creator has never been identified, there is no trace of the character before September, and on September 20 an X user claimed it was all AI-generated; the debate spilled onto the r/isthisAI subreddit. The project's own website answers with a wink, saying it will not settle the matter.

What raised red flags is money: that same September 20, a $JEANPHIL token launched on Solana, linked from the Instagram bio. According to French magazine L'ADN, cited by Brazil's O Tempo, the creator has made more than $100,000 in trading fees from the token — not from the videos — and creators are warning of a possible pump-and-dump. The format has already spawned copycats, including an 'English rival' with his own coin.
