Gears of War: E-Day debuts at 88 on Metacritic, the best-reviewed Gears since Gears 3
The Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago prequel earns perfect scores from some critics ahead of its October 6 launch on Xbox, PC and Game Pass.
Foto: The Coalition/XboxMarcus Fenix is back on the right foot. As the review embargo lifted on Wednesday (Oct. 1), The Coalition's Gears of War: E-Day landed on Metacritic with an average between 87 and 88 — the series' best showing since Gears of War 3 (91) and above Gears 4 and Gears 5, which both sat at 84.
The prequel is set on Emergence Day, when the Locust burst out from underground, and stars Marcus and Dom Santiago alongside new characters. Pure Xbox and DayOne handed out 10s and called it the best combat in the franchise in twenty years; GamingBolt gave it a 9, while VGC and GAMINGbible gave 8s. The outlier was France's Gamekult, which scored it 5 and described a series 'on autopilot'.
Some reviews are still in progress because multiplayer wasn't available to press before launch. The game officially releases October 6 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, arriving day one on Game Pass; Premium edition owners are already playing in early access.
