The Recording Academy has decided: the new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category will debut at the 69th Grammys in February 2027. CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said that in listening sessions with the industry, 'the loudest feedback' came from supporters of the award — and acknowledged the decision 'will not satisfy everyone.'

The controversy began when BTS withdrew its album 'Arirang' from consideration. The group said it wants its music heard 'for what it is' rather than 'divided by region or language,' raising fears that the category could become a ghetto keeping Asian artists out of the top awards. ATEEZ's leader backed that stance.

Under the rules, recordings must make meaningful use of one or more Asian languages — fully English tracks are excluded — but artists can still compete in general categories such as Album and Record of the Year. Nominations arrive Nov. 17, and the ceremony is set for Feb. 7, 2027.
