Review: on 'World's Greatest!', Lil Nas X trades provocation for faith — and his mother's voice outweighs any controversy

His first new song in a year and a half, the single dedicated to Tamikia Hill is the most vulnerable comeback yet from the 'Old Town Road' star.

This is an opinion review. Lil Nas X spent much of his career using shock as fuel — the devil in the 'Montero' video, the 'blood' sneakers, the acid replies to his attackers. 'World's Greatest!', released Thursday (Oct. 1) on Columbia, is his first new song in about a year and a half, and it flips that switch without ceremony: it's a song of hope, written entirely by him and produced by C.WRAY and Steve Rusch, about coming from little and pushing forward when the road gets tight.

The context makes it all heavier. The track arrives after a hard year: in June, the rapper revealed a bipolar II diagnosis and the treatment he underwent; in late August, he lost his mother, Tamikia Hill. She closes the six-minute video, directed by Phillip Youmans in Atlanta, in a voicemail with the phrase he says has guided his whole life: 'Walk by faith, not by sight.' No marketing trick could compete with that, and the smart move is letting the moment breathe instead of turning grief into spectacle.

The blend of pop rock, pop rap and R&B behind the track echoes the more melodic Lil Nas X of 'Montero,' and listeners have hailed its 'comeback song' energy. The risk is the same as with any self-help anthem: the triumphant message sometimes sounds more generic than the story behind it, and the split reception over the chorus shows the single persuades more through what it represents than through its melody.

Still, as a reintroduction, it works. Instead of demanding attention with a scandal, Lil Nas X asks for it with honesty — and from someone who turned noise into an art form, that is the most interesting provocation he could offer right now.

Score: 7/10
