9.8 million views in five days and nobody can tell if it's an '80s movie: the AI Rumpelstiltskin meme, explained

An AI-generated fantasy clip of a little man dancing on his tiptoes to Riff Raff became a template on TikTok and X, and plenty of people swore it was a scene from an old film.

Where it came from: in late August, Instagram pages that post AI-generated fantasy, such as Stroinaya and Neuroferma, shared a video styled like a 1980s film. In it, a short Rumpelstiltskin dances for a young woman in a barn while spinning straw into gold; she kisses him and he turns into a prince. For a month, the clip had just over 840 shares. The turning point came in late September, when it was paired with rapper Riff Raff's 'Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz' and the tiptoe shuffle became an instant joke.

How it blew up: on Sept. 29, TikToker @6aimbot9 posted the video with the caption 'The type of dreams I be having after taking dollar store melatonin,' passing 850,000 views in a week. On Oct. 1, a post on X reached 9.8 million views in five days. Then came the edits swapping the little man for other figures: streamer Asmongold, Sam and Dean from 'Supernatural,' Deadpool and Wolverine, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and even Argentina's president alongside minister Luis Caputo.

Why it fools people: some viewers believed the scene came from an old Russian film or the 1987 'Rumpelstiltskin,' and some even linked it to David Lynch's 'Twin Peaks.' It is none of those: Know Your Meme confirms the video was entirely AI-generated. The grainy VHS look that mimics '80s fantasy cinema is exactly what makes the meme so uncanny and so hard to forget.
