'Instagram is for girls': Elon Musk reignites his Meta feud and splits the internet

The X owner endorsed a post from an account that deleted Instagram and was called sexist; it's his second jab of the kind this year.

Elon Musk took another swipe at Meta on Friday (Oct. 2). Replying to a post by the account Geiger Capital, which said it had deleted Instagram and described the app as 'made for women,' the X owner summed it up: 'Instagram is for girls.'

The line went viral and divided social media. Critics called the remark sexist and pointed out that the platform has billions of users of every gender; one asked, 'Damn is social media based on gender now?' Others defended Instagram as the place that sets cultural and aesthetic trends, while Musk's supporters read it as simple trolling to promote X, a direct rival to Mark Zuckerberg's app.

It isn't the first time. In May 2026, Musk mocked grown men who sent him their Instagram profiles, a post that was also criticized as offensive. Analysts quoted by international outlets see the recurring jabs as another chapter in Big Tech's fight for attention, advertisers and cultural clout.
